This Is Not Baby Sitting This Is Improvement, With The Brooklyn Nets

Dad Life

A friend sent me a link to a FREE Monthly Brooklyn Nets Kids Basketball Academy which most NBA teams do as a way to give back to their community! I highly recommend you check to see if your city has something similar to it. Just go to google or click here and replace the Nets with your city’s team.

We took full advantage of it and it is definitely a Cool4Dads Certified Event

How To Survive Coaching Youth Basketball For The 1st Time

Dad Life

**Originally Posted On Cool4Dads.com**

Ever thought about coaching a sports team that your child was in but not sure how? I got YOU!

To ensure I had the quality time with my then 9 year old son, I challenged myself to coach his CYO 4th grade basketball team.

I was a 1st time coach and had a team of 1st time basketball players in a league where there was no mercy.

I survived coaching, it wasn’t easy at first but these few things really helped me!

Want A Real Challenge? Do A Rope Course With Your Kids

I thought my son would inherit these climbing skills naturally but he can’t even climb a gate.

I Blame Myself For His Lack Of Skills

The climbing experiences that I had grown up with don’t exist for my son because we made his ipad his best friend. I let a digital device take the place of his outdoor experiences.

But I have a fix, a rope course. Our first was The Tree Top Adventures @ Turtle Back Zoo.

Creating Memories While Building A Bird House At Home Depot

Dad Life

I am always looking for activities to do with my kids that will educate them but will also entertain ME! Why should they have all the fun, all the TIME?

But finding one that is “dad friendly” isn’t always the easiest.

That’s where Home Depot comes into play.

The only power tools I like are computers and tablets. So visiting Home Depot for fun wasn’t something you would catch me doing until I found their Kid Workshops. I can’t stress enough how much I love their workshops. They offer a new one every month with different themes.

Oh yeah, they are FREE!!!

Recently they offered an Angry Bird, Build A Bird House Workshop. My sons love Angry Bird and the movie was about to be released, so it was perfect timing.

Off we went and here are a few lessons reinforced along the way.

Built On Wax: #Bars4Motivation Vol VIII

#Bars4Motivation, Built On Wax

For me not only did Hip Hop tell a story similar to my own, but it also helped motivate me to chase my dreams. Hearing someone like Biggie say it “It Was All A Dream” and then accomplishing those dreams inspired me to chase the things I only dreamed about.

#Bars4Motivation is a way to keep me motivated when I need it most, hopefully it can do the same for you!

This week’s #Bars4Motivation was inspired by all the great speakers at Nihal Mehta’s M1 Summit.

I barely go to events but this is one I try to never miss. They focus on mobile and bring in dope speakers to drop gems on mobile strategies and the future of mobile. I highly suggest it if you are thinking about starting
a mobile first company or thinking about your mobile strategy.

Besides learning, many of the speakers drop gems on opportunities they took not knowing the outcome and basically starting a company with zero connections or knowledge.

While riding the train home these three tracks came up and basically set the mood for the rest of the week. Get your mind right below!

They Can Steal Your Ideas But Not Your Hustle

Lessons From My Real World

Every morning or even throughout the day I am sure you have had ideas pop into your head that you feel would be a game changer! You know the type, the one that will make you popular and flush with cash. That Bentley isn’t a dream anymore type of idea.

You start to think about the idea more and more until one day you see your idea in the real world. Someone beat you too it!

Someone else actually put in the work to launch the idea you had, fucking thieves I tell yah, no damn shame!!!

But did they rob you of your idea or did your rob yourself?

Many are afraid to share their ideas even though most ideas aren’t new. They are afraid someone else will take their idea and make a billion dollars off of it. I am sure it has happened a few times but more than likely much less than you think.

There are many pros and cons when it comes to sharing your idea but one thing for sure, an idea is worthless unless you bring it alive!

Built On Wax: #Bars4Motivation Vol VII

#Bars4Motivation, Built On Wax

For me not only did Hip Hop tell a story similar to my own, but it also helped motivate me to chase my dreams. Hearing someone like Biggie say it “It Was All A Dream” and then accomplishing those dreams inspired me to chase the things I only dreamed about.

For #Bars4Motivation I will explore lyrics that keep me inspired and hopefully will do the same for you!

This week’s motivation comes from the key word “GRIND!”

Many of us grind it out at corporate gigs, school or even in entrepreneurship for many different reasons.

Just like everyone else; I get consumed by the grind and forget to appreciate the journey at times. I forget why I am doing it in the 1st place.

But I am quickly learning that the grind is just that, the GRIND, and life goes on while you’re doing it.

I stated to create with little to no money and barely any experience. I knew and respected that when you put in work or grind, great things happen. But it won’t happen over night and it won’t be easy.

This weeks #Bars4Motivation is dedicated to all of those grinding, not really knowing what the future holds for them. Keep hustling, the grind will eventually REWARD YOU!

Profits Over Poverty: The Mindset

Lessons From My Real World

As the barrier to entry in regards to tech entrepreneurship shrinks, the disparity between those in poverty and the rest increases. Many of our experiences while living in poverty have destroyed our mindsets. Those experiences and the lack of familiar faces in tech have created a bigger economic gap than most of us would like to admit.

Even if some came from poverty, rich investors or founders will always tell you that it doesn’t matter where you came from, who you know or how much money you have to start a business. Even though most of the times they are correct, that is not what people that came from poverty want to hear.

Most will tell you not to worry about profit, to worry about growth. This is something that is hard to grasp when you came up on food stamps; when every dollar counted towards your survival. I came from this and my mindset was messed up until I got to college, where growth happened.

For context picture this; you grow up in poverty, welfare is your best friend and only way to survive. You work hard in school, get into a great college, graduate and land a corporate gig paying 60k plus a nice 401k match! Now 60 k doesn’t sound like a lot but when you live in a family of 5 and live under the poverty level you just became “hood rich” and you got real insurance! That’s the reality that most of us have to deal with. Some of us are the 1st to go to college or even get a decent paying job, but you want us to believe that we must risk it all to achieve greatness?

It’s hard to risk it all when you become the “one.” The one that made it to college, the one that got a good job, the one to make something of themselves. For us it has to be Profit Over Poverty at all times. Our minds were built that way by our upbringing so going against that mindset isn’t the easiest.

That mind set was one that took me forever to let go and I’m sure many will never let it go. If anything I argue that growing up in poverty actually helps us. It gives us something big to strive for, The World! The Profits Over Poverty mindset shouldn’t stop you either! Get your mind right below!

For #Bars4Motivation I will explore lyrics that keep me inspired and hopefully will do the same for you!

This weeks motivation came via end less nights of hustling. After taking some time off to regroup and appreciate my family, it was time to start working on something new. I wanted to work on a project based around family activities since I am a big advocate of living that #presenceoverpresents life. This week I put my lean startup skills to use and started doing hardcore customer development. Not the most fun or easy but it’s always better to test your assumption with the actual market you are trying to serve.

No need to waste time on creating things people don’t want! These tracks kept me motivated and sometimes even distracted me as I’m sure my neighbors can attest to ha ha!
